What to do when AVG doesn’t update

Posted on: October 9th, 2008

Sometimes your AVG software stops updating itself. From my experience it happens in two instances:
- when a major program update happens – these updates doesn’t happen automatically. Example: switching from version 7.5 to 8.0
- when a minor program update fails to install correctly.

Both can be fixed by following these steps:

  1. Download and save the newest installer from http://filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
(Click on Download Latest Version on the right side and save the file on the desktop – or some location on your hard drive where you can find it later.)
  2. Uninstall your current AVG.
This you can do two ways (both do the same):
    - Go to Start -> All Programs -> AVG Free -> Uninstall AVG Free

    - Go to Start -> Control Panel (it might be under Settings) -> Add Remove Programs (in Vista this is called Programs and Features). Select AVG and click on Uninstall (might be called Change/Remove).
  3. Once AVG is uninstalled, get the computer restarted.
  4. Start the AVG installer that you downloaded in step 1 and go through the install steps.

This will get AVG’s latest version on your computer. The updates after that will go through.

Some notes:

There could be other complications that might prevent AVG from updating. These are usually third party firewalls like Norton, McAffee, Zonealarm, etc. If you have one of these make sure that AVG is not blocked from accessing the internet.

Occasionally their servers are overloaded and that can make an update unsuccessful however that will clear up at the next update attempt.
