Sony VAIO: Good Looking But Expensive

Posted on: February 7th, 2009

I wrote an article a while back on an extremely overpriced replacement part from Sony. I just found another example.

Recently I got this email:

Hi I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ260P
PCG-6L2L
13″3 screen needs replacing

I get quite a few similar requests and usually the cost of a laptop screen replacement is around $200.

In this case, I went and checked out eBay where I usually find the needed part. I found several ones but each one was over $500!!

That was another shocking blow to my reality. How can a tiny 13″ LCD screen be $500??  For that price you can buy a low-end big screen TV, three times the size of this tiny screen.

Well, I told this person: because of the inappropriately high cost of the screen it’s not worth fixing. For $500 she can buy a new laptop. And I made sure to make it clear: don’t buy Sony VAIO because if something needs replacing it will cost a lot!

Sony VAIO’s are good looking, their design is on par with Apple’s but unfortunately their price is matching Apple’s too. The good news is that the PC manufacturing market is competitive enough to provide alternatives to Sony with similar level of quality but much lower price. I usually recommend Dell or HP for both laptop and desktop computers. They are reasonably priced, of good quality and the replacement parts for them are reasonably priced as well.
