Problems and Solutions: SBC/ATT Yahoo Browser

Quite a few people are still using the browser that came with their DSL installation kit. It was used to be called SBC and then AT&T Yahoo Browser.

Here are the icons for the SBC and AT&T versions of this software:

I’ve been frequently getting a complaint in the last year or so that users are keep getting an error message about “script errors”. I looked and looked but didn’t find any solution to this. Interestingly enough the pages that produced those messages with Yahoo browser came up fine in Internet Explorer, or Firefox on the same machine.

Then shortly after the first cases of this phenomenon I tried to do an update to the browser and it was missing from AT&T’s downloads. I thought maybe they don’t support this anymore?

I didn’t have a definite answer to this until a couple of days ago when I got an email from a client entitled “What is happening to the AT&T Yahoo Browser?”. It linked to an AT&T support page: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB402059&cv=803,739,102&ct=

That confirmed what I figured. So evidently those error messages come about because the Yahoo browser didn’t keep up with the changes on the Yahoo pages (where most of the error messages were).

If you read the article it tells you to uninstall the Yahoo browser and just use Internet Explorer. With small print they list Firefox too as an alternative. If you are changing from Yahoo browser then might as well chose the better option: Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer. This one, besides being a lot more secure, can help you block the ads on the ad-ridden pages of Yahoo – using the Adblock Plus plugin.

Now, you could ask: What about my bookmarks? Are they gone? Fortunately they are not. Yahoo actually saved them on their servers. There are two ways of accessing them:

  1. Logging in at bookmarks.yahoo.com. You’ll see your bookmarks there. You can download them and import into your browser if you go to the “Tools” and then “Export Bookmarks”
  2. Use the Yahoo Toolbar. This will give you convenient access to your bookmarks. It’s the closest interface that you have to the Yahoo browser. You can download the toolbar at toolbar.yahoo.com

Of course, you can stick with the Yahoo browser but you’ll have to put up with the script error messages and it’s possible that eventually it won’t work on Yahoo pages at all.
