Planning on Buying a New Printer? Read this!

Posted on: February 27th, 2009

Two very recent cases and dozens of previous ones clearly indicated to me that it’s a very wise thing to avoid HP (Hewlett-Packard) printers?

Why?

HP printers are usually mechanically good and produce good quality prints – hardware-wise I have no objection to them, BUT the software that comes with them is just horrible.

For one thing, if you don’t watch carefully during the setup you’ll end up with several hundred megabytes less hard drive space and 3-4 items in your start-up that run constantly and slowing the computer down. The software is excessively bloated and ineffective.

In the cases I had to deal with HP printer problems, almost exclusively, the software was faulty. In a recent case the scanning software just would not work, despite all efforts. In at least three cases, a software component (which proved to be unecessary) of HP’s software used up almost all the processor time making the computers extremely slow.

When a client went back to the store where he got his $300 all-in-one “wonder” that could not be made to scan, he was told that they were aware of issues with HP software. So I’m not the only one who’ve seen the problems. Unfortunately, as it seems HP has not made efforts in the recent years to address the issues with their printer software.

So what’s the solution?

Simply avoid buying HP printer products. There are many good alternatives so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Canon, or Epson would be my suggestion, or even Brother is a better choice based on my exprience. There has been significantly less problems with these brands.

Hopefully HP will realize that there’s a problem which needs addressing and will do something about it. Until then use some other brands in order to force HP to make their products better.
