“Magic” Fix for Internet Explorer

Posted on: December 16th, 2010

In the last couple of days there seems to be a rash of problems with Internet Explorer. People getting the error message: “Internet Explorer has encountered an problem and needs to close”.  Fortunately, in almost all cases a very simple fix took care of this.

The fix is to reset the Internet Settings.

Because you can’t start IE you’d need to go to the Control Panel and then open the Internet Options icon, select the Advanced Tab and then click on the “Reset…” button (it’s not in the list but below the list of options!)

Once the settings are reset you’d just need to start Internet Explorer and it’ll most likely come up. If it doesn’t then there are corruptions in your Windows system which should be taken care of by a skilled computer technician.

Why this works?

Honestly, I don’t know the exact reason but the most likely explanation is that the crashes of IE are caused by toolbars and add-ons which get disabled when you do a reset on the settings.

Once you got IE working I’d recommend loading a better browser to surf the internet. My favorite is Firefox.

You can download Firefox from: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
