How to Upgrade AVG Free Edition

Posted on: April 30th, 2009

Recently I’ve been getting a number of requests on this subject from my clients. Because AVG gives notifications after a new version comes out and you are still using the older version. The current one is Version 8.5 – so if you use 8.0, or 7.5 then you might be getting those messages too.

First let me clarify two words:

Update: A minor change in the software, or the database it is operating upon, usually not affecting the look and feel of the software.

Upgrade:  An installation of a newer version of the software, usually, but not always, involving changes in the user interface and functionality of the software.

Example: You have Windows XP on your computer and you do the Windows Updates. You will probably not see any difference on how your screen is, or how the computer reacts. These usually just fix some security problems that came to light, or correct some other issues.
However if you decide that you want Windows Vista on your computer then that would be an upgrade. It will look a whole lot different and it will have different features, (the same things called differently :-(   ),etc. It’s a noticeable change.

Now back to AVG upgrade:

The answer actually can be found on this website but under a different title because I wrote the article originally for a different reason. It is:

What to do when AVG doesn’t update

The procedure in the above article is the same that I’d use to upgrade AVG to its latest version.
