AVG Update Error (Aug 16, 2008)

Posted on: August 17th, 2008

I just got an email from a client who said that her AVG failed to update tonight and gave an error saying: “A .bin file is missing”.

Then I worked on one of my computers and started an update on AVG and the same error message came up for me also. So I Google’d it and found a number of discussions on it and one of them had a solution that worked. Because it was written for computer geeks I wrote down the step-by-step instructions so anybody can do it.

Apparently it’s a glitch in the AVG automatic update process and it’s not resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling AVG. Grisoft (the maker of AVG) is working on the resolution of this issue. However until then here’s how you can get your AVG updated:

Your AVG status icon will look like this, if the updates did not happen, or one of the components are not functioning:

The fix is to do a manual update. The steps are:

  1. Go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update
  2. Download and save the above indicated files onto your desktop:
  3. Open up AVG user interface by right-clicking on the AVG icon at the bottom right of your screen:
  4. Select “Update from Directory” in the Tools menu:
  5. Select the desktop and click OK.
  6. The update process will now go through and your AVG icon will turn into this:
  7. Delete the two update files from your desktop (see picture at step 2).

Hope this works for everyone. Grisoft might fix the problem before you read this, but it doesn’t hurt to know how to do a manual update if needed.
