Antivirus 2009

Posted on: November 27th, 2008

Antivirus 2009 is a new menace, a rouge antivirus that tries to extort money from the users of the computers it infects. Recently I had two computer in the shop with this within 24 hours. There are some important things to know if Antivirus 2009 shows up on your computer:

First of all, you, or your antivirus software does not stand much chance in cleaning this infection up. It comes with a “side virus” (rootkit) that I described in the article called the The Sneakiest Virus. Once it infected the computer it’s undetectable so your antivirus will not even see an infection. Also one of its main actions is to block access to all major antivirus companies’ websites (avg.com, symantec.com, mcafee.com, etc). Thus your antivirus won’t be able to update and you won’t be able to download antivirus. Nasty, eh?

Maybe antivirus makers will catch up with this rootkit but until then if you got this infection contact us. Only with our advanced tools can this infection be removed!

Fortunately the infection can be removed without any leftover damage to the system (some viruses mess things up real bad). At this point, I don’t know of any security software that would be capable of fully removing Antivirus 2009.
